Notion vs Coda: internal docs are not the general ledger

Reviewed August 21, 2026 by Robb

Notion and Coda both want to be the company’s brain. Fine for specs, notes, and a hiring wiki. Dangerous when ‘the forecast’ lives only in a doc nobody can audit. We do not pick your wiki. We insist that cash, P&L, and the cap table live in systems that close.

Notion

Notion tends to fit when

The team already writes there and you will keep finance files out of it except as links to the real pack. Good for narrative. Bad as a subledger.

Coda

Coda tends to fit when

You like docs that behave more like apps and someone will maintain the docs. Same rule: operating notes yes, unofficial QBO no.

Link out to the close

A board-pack page in the wiki should point at the dated PDF or the ledger export, not a copied table that drifts. Date it. Owner it.

Permissions

Whole-company access to draft financials is how numbers leak into the market. Finance space, tighter than the handbook.

Do not build a second ERP

The day you are reconciling Notion to the bank, you have failed the architecture. We have unwound that. It is slower than doing the books right.

Frequently asked questions

Which should we pick?
The one people will write in. Finance should not be the tie-break unless the tool is eating the close.
Can the model live in Coda?
A copy, maybe. The model we trust lives in a spreadsheet or system with versioning and an owner. Same as the ledger.
What do investors want to see?
Not your wiki. The room: financials, cap table, contracts. Pretty internal docs are optional.
