Figma vs Sketch: design seats are software spend — keep them on the P&L

Reviewed August 21, 2026 by Robb

Figma won most collaborative design. Sketch still exists, especially on Mac-native teams. This is not a finance strategy. It is a vendor. We care that seats match headcount, that former employees are off the bill, and that you are not paying for three design tools because nobody unsubscribed.

Figma

Figma tends to fit when

Product, design, and engineering need a shared file in the browser. Watch org-wide seats and unused editors. Collaboration is the point. The invoice should not be a surprise.

Sketch

Sketch tends to fit when

The team already works that way and has a reason not to move. Fine. Same seat hygiene. File handoff still has to work for whoever builds the product.

Seat audits

Quarterly: who has a license, who left, who never logs in. Software creep is a close cousin of headcount creep. Both are burn.

Not in the data room unless asked

Investors do not need your Figma. They need the product and the numbers. Do not clutter the VDR with design files.

Switching has a people cost

Migrations eat weeks. Cost that in the plan if someone wants to ‘just move.’ We will put it next to hiring, not next to a tweet.

Frequently asked questions

Which is cheaper?
Count seats and unused seats. The cheaper SKU with twice the ghosts is not cheaper.
Should finance pick the design tool?
No. Finance should see the bill and the offboarding. Product picks the craft.
Is this material in a raise?
Only as part of software spend. Material if it is out of control. Not as a narrative.
