Accelerators vs VC

An accelerator is an early, standardized check inside a program. A VC is a later, larger check inside a partnership. Operators sometimes treat the accelerator as a substitute for a seed lead. It is a start. It is rarely the whole raise. Plan the books for what comes after demo day, not just for demo day.
Accelerator
You want a defined program and a first institutional-looking name on the table at a standard price. Useful if you will use the network. Insufficient if you needed a lead, a board, and enough cash to reach a real A.
VC
You need a lead, a sized round, and partners who will live with a venture outcome. Process is slower. Diligence will read the ledger. Do not walk in with accelerator paper you cannot explain.
Accelerator then seed VC is a path. Accelerator instead of a seed VC is a hope. If the program check is the only money, run the company like the next round may not come. That is how we set burn with clients.
A SAFE from a program plus a priced VC round is fine if you convert and refresh the pool on purpose. It is not fine if the partner is the first person to add the percentages. Model it in the office, not in the partner meeting.
